Well

So who knew? I'm really anxious to see more of Pope Francis and get to know him better. I love that he asked us to pray for him and that he prayed those three prayers that we could all pray along with him. This is so much more interesting than I thought it would be. Like any good Catholic, I love a mystery.

Well, I guess I should interrupt this stream of consciousness to do some work, since I haven't done a lick since the white smoke appeared.

  1. I'm with you, Janet. I haven't been able to concentrate on anything (work-related) since I saw the white smoke. I was very touched by his initial gesture of good will to Benedict XVI.

  2. Oh, now I see we were praying those three prayers for Benedict XVI. That is even better. I didn't understand that at the time.

  3. Yes, he led the prayers for Benedict XVI, and then asked the people to pray silently for him (Francis). After that, I don't know. I'll try to watch the replay on EWTN tonight.

  4. I saw it. That was about it except the blessing and he hopes to see us Sunday, and something about the Angelus or some prayer to Mary. I think my mind must be gone completely. I just didn't pick out Benedict's name before the prayers.

  5. "Tomorrow I want to go to pray the Madonna, that she may protect Rome." That's what he said about praying to Mary.

  6. Okay, here's the most helpful thing I've read: http://ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/papabile-day-men-who-could-be-pope-13

  7. I think I must have gotten that link from Craig's comment on Light on Dark Water.

  8. I thought that first appearance on the balcony was terribly touching. I was still thinking, "What? Who? Cardinal Who?" But he seemed to radiate such humility and good humor, I warmed to him at once as a pastor. And what I've read about him thus far is interesting and impressive. Ron said he had dressed down the Argentine Prime MInister over gay adoptions, for example -- funny that Benedict came in with the "Rottweiler" reputation, but Francis may prove a bulldog.

And after watching the seagulls on the conclave chimney all day, I love that he's Francis. The birds were waiting for a sermon!

  9. I was watching EWTN because I couldn't get the Vatican webcam on my computer at work and the commentators seemed completely speechless after the name was announced--like they couldn't figure out who it was.

  10. I snuck over to Allie's desk and we attempted to work while CNN streamed. Fortunately the rest of her unit was gone.

  11. Ha. Well, I didn't have to be so surreptitious. I think my boss was watching, too. I'm sure that a lot of work didn't get done all over the world yesterday. I keep asking myself why I didn't watch like this when Benedict was elected. Then I remember that that was probably when I used to knit while I waited for pages to load--and no TV. But I kept thinking that I had to watch everything because this may be the last time it happens in my life, but now I think maybe not.

  12. I asked myself that same question, but didn't get an answer.

I had the EWTN live feed in a 2"x2" window on my computer while I worked rather distractedly, and as there was no commentary, just straight a/v, I had to just guess what the guy was saying when he made the announcement. I caught a few words like "Francisco" and was very confused, so had to go elsewhere to get the name.

I want a "like" button for Sally's comment about the birds.

  13. Well, even if you had had sound, it took them forever to figure out who it was.
